Auction rules

How the silent auction works. These rules apply when the first auction opens.

1. Registering and signing in

To bid you agree to these rules and sign in with a one-time email link that expires in 15 minutes. One person per email. You must be 18 or older.

2. Sealed (silent) bids

Bid amounts are private. Everyone can see how many bids a lot has. Only you can see your own bids, and only the seller sees all amounts. You can raise your own bid by at least the lot's minimum increment until it closes.

3. Bids are binding

A bid is an offer to buy at that price if it wins. Bids can't be withdrawn, except for an obvious typing error reported before the close. Contact us right away.

4. Reserve

Some lots have a reserve, a hidden minimum price, and the lot page says so. If no bid reaches it, the lot doesn't sell. Lots marked "No reserve" sell to the highest bid at or above the starting bid.

5. Winning

The highest bid when the lot closes wins. If two bids are equal, the earlier one wins. Closing times are fixed and shown in Eastern time.

6. Payment

Nothing is charged when you bid. After the close, the winner gets an email with the total and a secure payment link. Payment is due within 7 days. Never send money before you receive that email.

7. Tax, fees and shipping

Physical items add 7% Florida sales tax. No buyer's premium is added. Shipping is quoted separately before payment, and the item ships after payment clears.

8. Descriptions

We describe each specimen as accurately as we can: mineral, locality, size, weight and known provenance. Photos show the actual item.

9. Unpaid lots and changes

If a winner doesn't pay in time, we may offer the lot to the next-highest bidder or relist it. We may withdraw a lot before it closes, for example if a description error is found.
